Personally, since I have working dogs, I don't see that it's necessary for them. But when I've had them in the local Christmas parade I've put bells on them for a festive effect. I don't think there's any harm in it as long as the costume is designed to be comfortable for the dog and doesn't get in his eyes.

Dogs with genetically mutated coats are another matter. Some breeds have very thin hair, short hair, or no hair, and these do need additional protection from the cold and rain. For them a sweater or coat is a godsend. Their coats are unnatural and do not provide the protection that a good functional wolflike coat does.

Some dogs even require sunscreen and sunglasses to protect their pink nose leathers and their light sensitive eyes from harmful UV.

He occasionally wears hats.Sometimes he like to wear them, and sometimes he doesn't.

He has to wear a jersey when it is cold. He actually tells me which one. I will hold out the jerseys, and then he sniff each one and looks at them, and then will point with his head which one.

The one day, a family member brought one of their dogs with to visit, and that dog had gotten a new outfit, and my dog got jealous. So, I had to go and get his hat so that he would feel included and happy. Then my brother took his hat off, and my dog made him put it back on

lol
So, yes I do. I only really dress him up when it is cold.My dog loves to snuggle in the blankets

Another family member's dog likes to have its jersey on when there is a lot of commotion. It is like a security blanket for her

My Yorkie's have an assortment of sweat-shirts, jackets, sweaters, and rain and hooded snow gear for the cold of late fall until the spring time. I have these items as they do not have an undercoat for protection and they are prone to bronchial/pneumonia problems. Not to mention that they are simply cold! I purchases them all over. Good old Wal-Mart has them for $5 up, Petsmart has great sales at end of season, Tuesday Morning has a pet selection; lot's of it on clearance, too. Many pet-shops carry a complete line of clothing, and there are many boutiques devoted to accessories and clothing for dogs. There are thousands of dog clothes for sale on line. That is fun...looking at all of the wonderful selections. I do not dress them up unless the weather calls for it, I have enough laundry to do without adding more. Oh, not to mention a good reason for protecting the long haired dog's coats is, more drying, brushing, and trying to get ice-balls out of the underarm and belly area. I tried boots for the icy times, but they either kicked or bit them off! Happy Shopping, Angel Wolf 13

I would agree that smaller dogs from warmer climes such as chihuahuas probably do need some extra protection in the colder weather. On larger dogs though, it's an extravagance.
